Designer Interview: Nina Freudenberger of Haus Interior

If you haven’t yet discovered Nina Freudenberger of Haus Interior, you must keep reading.  Haus Interior is a full service interior design firm and retail space. With upscale stores in both New York and Los Angeles, we can’t help but lust over her absolutely incredible work! She is young, talented, and full of artistic energy. Her bold use of pattern and color is like no other designer. We love her creative wallpaper choices and spectacular rugs. Notice her ability to mix the contemporary with the traditional.

We had the honor to interview Nina about interior design, designing small spaces, and creating a chic living space. If you live in Los Angeles, definitely check out Haus Interior at 8211 West 3rd Street, Los Angeles, CA 90048.  Thank you Nina!

Q:What inspires you? Everything! I think the key to consistently evolving ones' design work is to keep your eyes open and aware of all of the beautiful things around you. Traveling is one of my passions and it truly brings me an incredible amount of inspiration.

Q:If someone is on a budget but can splurge on only one piece, what should they purchase? I think one of the best to buy is a proper bed. It really elevates the level of design throughout the rest of the house and is something that you can move with through life. Styles change with sofas, chairs, floor coverings, artwork, but the need for a bed stays the same. Also, the size of a bed isn't as flexible as with say, a sofa, so you will be able to work with it in almost any space.

Q:When starting a new project, what is the first thing you do? Speak with the client. The single most important thing an interior designer can do is listen very carefully to what the client wants and ask the right questions. And I also make sure to spend some time in the space to feel inspired and bring energy to the start of project.

Q:Is there a classic—a staple—that is always a part of your design…a signature? I love wall coverings and decorative wall paint. I think it is the easiest way to change the feeling of a room, and while straight painting is effective I think using a pattern or graphics on the wall de-emphasizes the need for important artwork which is often the last on the list of items clients are purchasing when working on a project.

Q:In your opinion, what makes a great room?  I love mixing vintage and new furniture, I think it is so important to have both in the home to create a sense of history. I also love those small, quirky moments where things become inventive and fun.

Q:Where are the best ways to save money if someone is on a budget but wants high style? I think one easy way is through fabric. I have found some incredible fabrics not at the main design centers but at small fabric houses. Even for small pillows, seat cushions or for a larger project such as a side chair, this is a simple thing to do and always an adventure.

Q:What room is your favorite room to decorate, and why? I love a formal living room. It is so fun to create a space where you know many memories will be had, such as holiday events or cocktail parties. It is about making the space both beautiful but highly functional.

Q:What are 3 ideas for a small living space? Working and living in NYC, I understand the need for careful design in a small space. I think one important idea is creating additional storage in clever ways, such using a chest as a coffee table or purchasing a bed that has legs so you can use the underneath for storage. Another main point is to recognize your space for what it is – no need to fit a 8 person dining table when you are living in a 1 bedroom. Be reasonable about how you actually use the space versus what you think you should have to meet a specific "look." And make sure to use your walls to the fullest, with paint, artwork, shelving, etc, no one should ever live with plain white walls.
